It’s official – the lesser seen Deputy President of South Africa, David Mabuza, has finally returned to the country after a prolonged absence. Mabuza has spent over a month in Russia receiving medical attention relating to a longstanding illness that the 60-year-old is afflicted with.

The public have been waiting with bated breath for news about Mabuza’s illness and plans to return to his office, with many having criticised the Deputy President for his persistent disappearances during his term.

The South African has reached out to the Presidency for more information, and will provide an update when a response is forthcoming.

DA calls for Surgeon-General to clarify Deputy President’s condition

His spokesperson, Matshepo Seedat, told TimesLIVE that Mabuza has officially resumed his duties, which are extensive.

Mabuza is tasked with overseeing South Africa’s COVID-19 vaccination rollout, as well as playing a leading role in mitigating the current battles faced by state owned power supplier Eskom. The public have therefore been eagerly awaiting an update on his health and capability to perform these duties effectively.

Earlier this week, the Democratic Alliance (DA) wrote to South Africa’s Surgeon General, Lieutenant-General Zola Dabula, to update the nation on Mabuza’s health. The opposition party voiced serious concerns over Mabuza’s fitness to hold such an important role in government, and said that it is in the public interest for the Surgeon-General to clarify his suitability to continue as the country’s Deputy President given his frequent absence from office due to medical treatment.

“While Mabuza has the right to privacy when it comes to his health, if his condition is of such a nature that he has to regularly leave the country for a protracted period of time, the public should know whether he is indeed fit to continue in office,” they said in a statement

“His ability to carry out his constitutional duties as Leader of Government Business is crucial for the country. More so given his additional responsibilities as head of Cabinet’s Eskom turnaround efforts as well as the COVID-19 vaccine rollout.”
