It’s official! The ‘best pizza in Africa’ is right here in Hout Bay…
A restaurant in Hout Bay, Cape Town has achieved global acclaim this week, after it was formally recognised for serving ‘the best pizza in Africa’.

Mamma Mia! The best pizza joint on the WHOLE CONTINENT is located right on the doorstep of Cape Town. Massimo’s in Hout Bay, famous for its authentic Italian cuisine, have smashed it out of the park this week – after they were officially recognised as Africa’s premier destination for pizza-lovers.

The folks at 50 Top Pizza held their ceremony a few days ago, and assessed the quality of pizzerias across the world. Massimo’s, which has been a popular fixture in Hout Bay for a while now, took home the gong – and it’s easy (or should that be ‘cheesy’?) to see why: Bold flavour combinations and ambitious toppings are the order of the day, here:
Hout Bay restaurant earns global plaudits
50 Top Pizza hailed the Orione family, who are the owners of Massimo’s. Their ‘Roman-style pizza’, which boasts a ‘low and crunchy crust’, properly wowed the judges – and it was identified as a key factor in their success.
“Massimo Orione and his wife Tracy have brought a piece of Italy to South Africa. The atmosphere is informal and the staff is very kind and welcoming. The cuisine is traditional and beyond the great classics of regional Italian cooking, there is a marked concentration of dishes from Piemonte and Liguria.”
“The pizza is made in a way that is similar to the Roman style. The crust is low and crunchy and it is topped with excellent products.
