Revealed: These five areas in Cape Town have ‘worryingly low’ vaccination rates

From the five identified ‘areas of concern’ in Cape Town, one region has a vaccination rate of UNDER 10% for its elderly population.

Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Zahid Badroodien, has revealed that some regions of the city have sparked a real cause for concern – due to their extremely low vaccination rates.

How many people have been vaccinated in Cape Town

Any resident 60 years and older who has not registered, or has not received an appointment, can go to their nearest public sector vaccination site for assisted registration and vaccination. Seniors have been able to get the jab for the past few months, and a picture of how many elderly citizens have had their vaccines is starting to emerge.

Interestingly enough, 58% of all vaccinated citizens in Cape Town are women. Young people have also set the highest bar in registering for the inoculations, too. Sadly, their enthusiasm – unlike the virus – isn’t all that infectious.

Concerns over jab uptake in elderly citizens

The over-60s haven’t come out in massive numbers to get immunised. Badroodien has implored younger citizens, keen to have a vaccine and enjoy their social lives once more, to pull out all the stops and get their senior relatives jabbed.

“We are concerned about the number of residents who aren’t registered and the City is doing what it can to ensure the process is as smooth and accessible as possible. The youth must elders they know, who are eligible for the vaccine, to register. It is in everyone’s best interests to vaccinate as many eligible persons as possible.”

Where are the worst vaccination rates in Cape Town?

There are five regions of Cape Town where vaccination rates are through the floor. The shocking data shows that one region – a township just outside of Strand – has seen fewer than 10% of older residents register for their shots.
