Where are the Zuma no confiden

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA – MARCH 31: Protesters gather during the #ZumaMustFall picket outside Parliament on March 31, 2017 in Cape Town, South Africa. This is after President Jacob Zuma reshuffled his cabinet and fired Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and his deputy Mcebisi Jonas.

Judgement day is almost upon us. Well, upon Jacob Zuma that is… With tomorrow’s vote of no confidence looming largely over the leader, the South African public are prepared to make their voices heard yet again.

Where are the no confidence vote marches?

Cape Town will see the majority of the marches and protests, outside its parliamentary buildings. These will all coincide with today’s decision on whether the ballot will be open or held in secret, as well as the actual vote tomorrow.

So, how can you get involved? Where do you need to be? When does it all kick off? Don’t worry, we’ve got your backs on this one:

No confidence march against Zuma

Monday 7th August

Cape Town:

  • Lead by the Unite Behind group, more than 20 civil rights and faith-based organisations are taking part in a march on Monday afternoon in Cape Town, starting from Keizersgracht Street at 3 pm. They will be making their voices heard ahead of Speaker Baleka Mbete’s announcement on the secret ballot.
  • Mcebisi Jonas will be addressing the large gathering as they head to Parly, and demand that MPs ‘vote against government corruption.’
  • There will be an ANC pro-Zuma march in the Dullah Omar region of Cape Town from the Grand Parade to Parliament. The Western Cape police have issued a ‘no-tolerance’ policy to unlawful conduct.
Ex-deputy finance minister Mcebisi Jonas will address the protesters later this afternoon. He claims the Guptas offered him R600m to become Finance Minister (Gallo)

Not in Cape Town?

  • No stress… FutureSA want citizens to symbolically turn off their lights from 8-9pm on Monday, and are also pushing for motorists to keep their car lights on (whilst driving) throughout Tuesday 8th to show their ‘hope’ for a new era.

There’s plenty you can get involved with on Tuesday, too…

Vote of No Confidence

Tuesday 8th August

Cape Town:

  • The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) will gather at Keizergracht St at 9:30am on Tuesday, and will march on Parliament shortly afterwards.
  • The Unite Behind protests will also take place place on Tuesday morning. If you’re anywhere near Parliament, you will see the thousands that are turning out.
The last large-scale protest against Zuma in Cape Town drew thousands to the streets, following the ill-advised midnight cabinet reshuffle (Gallo)

Not in Cape Town?

  • Future South Africa have gained illustrious support for their National Day of No Confidence, and are encouraging businesses, workers and all South Africans to join in with their nationwide ‘shut down’.
  • From 12:00-14:00, employees are being told to leave their workplaces and take to the streets and vocalise their opposition to the leadership: The movement has received backing from the South African Council of Churches (SACC)‚ Fedusa‚ SAFTU and Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA).
  • Large and numerous protests are expected in Jozi’s city centre from midday onward.

Protest from anywhere

  • OUTA are also leading the charge for activism outside the Mother City: They have handily prepared a protest kit for anyone who wants to demonstrate against Zuma, from any part of the country.
  • It includes downloadable banners you can customise, as well as five A1-sized placards to make your feelings about the presidency known.
  • If you want to make your presence felt online, you can change your profile picture to include a #NoConfidence badge and lead the protest virally.
