December Allowance: Nzimande blasted for ‘letting students go hungry’

Students have vented their anger towards both NSFAS and Blade Nzimande, as many learners have been left without access to their December Allowance.

University students across South Africa are growing increasingly frustrated with NSFAS and the government, as the academic year extends into 2021. However, the December Allowance payments for our learners have not been forthcoming, leaving many out of pocket and fearing the worst.

When will December Allowance be paid out for SA students?

The December Allowance will not be paid in some institutions until students complete their end-of-year exams. The controversial system has sparked protests, as tertiary pupils voiced their discontent online.

Nzimande in the firing line

It seems that the opposition party has been listening: DA Shadow Minister for Higher Education, Science & Technology – Chantel King – has urged Blade Nzimande to ‘make good on his promise’ and ensure that these young adults receive the necessary expenses they need to cover meals and living costs. King is demanding a swift response:

“Blade Nzimande and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) must give direction on when the Scheme will extend allowances to those students who will continue their current academic year into 2021. NSFAS must urgently give a clear indication to universities on when these funds will be disbursed to students and over which time period.”

“Many students are still waiting for their NSFAS allowances to be paid out. This, despite the Minister giving assurances that additional living allowances to cover meals and personal expenses would be made available to students whose academic year has been extended. No student should be left behind due to unforeseen circumstances beyond their control.”
