A series of WhatsApp messages between Oscar Pistorius and Reeva Steenkamp were  presented to the court on Monday by SAPS Hawks cellphone analyst Captain Moller and revealed intimate details about the tensions in the couple’s relationship. Captain Moller received two iPhones, two Blackberries, two iPads and a MacBook Pro to examine.

One series of exchanges between Pistorius and Steenkamp confirm that Darren Fresco assisted with covering up the incident in which Pistorius discharged a pistol in Johannesburg restaurant Tashas.

OP to RS: “Angel, please don’t say a thing to any one. Darren told everyone it was his fault. I can’t afford for that to come out.”

RS to OP: “I have no idea what you talking about 😉 But thank u for telling me I appreciate it”.

The exchanges also reveal the extent to which Pistorius’ jealousy and anger frequently caused problems in their social life. On 19 January, less than a month before the shooting, Steenkamp wrote:

“Today was one of my best friend’s engagements and I wanted to stay longer and was enjoying myself but it’s over now. You have picked on me incessantly since you got back from CT and I understand that you are sick but it’s nasty… I was not flirting with anybody today… I feel sick that you suggested that and that u (sic) made a scene at the table and made us leave early.”

She also wrote “I’m sorry if you truly felt that I was hitting on my friend Sam’s husband and I’m sorry that you think that little of me… I’m scared of you sometimes and how u snap at me and how u react to me. I am the girl who let go with u even when I was scared out of my mind to.”

Pistorius’ response appears to reveal the irrational extent of his jealousy and the manner in which he expected to be able to control Steenkamp: “I was upset that you just left me after we got food to go talk to a guy and I was standing right behind you watching you touch his arm and ignore me and when I spoke up you just kept chatting to him when clearly I was upset.”

The trial continues.
