It has been revealed that Jacob Zuma’s month-long stay in a private medical facility is racking up the medical bills for the former president. Msholozi remains in hospital, with a series of complications relating to an undisclosed health issue.

How much have Jacob Zuma’s medical bills cost so far?

The Department of Correctional Services has been keeping a running tab on uBaba’s expenses. They estimate that the 79-year-old is facing a bill of roughly R400 000 – and that’s only up to this point so far. The fees could end up surpassing half-a-million rand by the time he is allowed to leave the facility on medical parole.

In a statement issued earlier today, the DCS said that the payment issue remains up in the air – somebody needs to account for the rising costs, but Zuma’s status as a former president has thrown a spanner in the works.

“To date, we have been billed for R398,271, The issue of payment is being discussed, considering the presidential privileges that Mr. Zuma enjoys”.

Will the taxpayer end up paying?

Given that the perks of leading your country last long after you’ve left office, there’s a real chance that these mounting medical bills will actually be covered by money from the state – generated by us taxpayers.

The use of public funds to pay for Zuma’s medical treatment would leave a sour taste in the mouths of millions.

Meanwhile, the JGZ Foundation confirmed on Tuesday that a ‘wide range of issues’ are being discussed with Mr. Zuma and his legal team – including the fact that JZ will miss his corruption trial tomorrow due to his ill-health.

Should the state fail to cough up, Zuma and his team may have to extend their crowdfunding efforts.
