Herman Mashaba has confirmed that former ANC MP (turned state capture whistleblower) Vytjie Mentor has joined his new political party. The former Johannesburg Mayor will take his work with The People’s Dialogue into the 2021 Municipal Elections, as he guns for local glory in several of SA’s major metros.

It was announced on Thursday that Mentor would switch allegiances to the as-yet-unnamed party, who are set to launch at the end of August. In a statement released earlier today, Mashaba praised the one-time ruling party representative for her ‘fearless work’ in tackling corruption.

“I am proud to announce that former ANC MP and state capture whistle-blower, Vytjie Mentor, will join us in the newly established political party to be launched at the end of August.”

“Vytjie has served in various capacities, including Chairperson of the Public Enterprises Portfolio Committee in Parliament, and became a household name in South Africa for her role in exposing state capture”, Herman Mashaba said.

“The testimony provided by Vytjie was critical to Thuli Madonsela’s investigative report entitled State of Capture. She’s believed to have averted an alleged plot by then-President Jacob Zuma to impose a state of emergency to prevent his departure, and publicly voted for the motion of no confidence against him.”

LET’S TALK POLICY: WHAT WOULD A VOTE FOR HERMAN MASHABA’S NEW POLITICAL PARTY MEAN?

  • He’s set to bring his mayoral rhetoric with him on this journey, promising a tough stance on crime and corruption.
  • Herman Mashaba states his new party will have a pro-poor focus, presenting solutions ‘for all South Africans’.
  • Mashaba said he wants to target “non-voters” – some 20 million in South Africa – to build a support base.
  • He’s also open to considering serious discussions on the death penalty, for the most abhorrent of crimes.
  • The ex-mayor has made it implicitly clear that inequality ‘has to be addressed’, with the goal of creating a strong middle-class in SA.
