What did the student wrongly given R14m by WSU splash her cash on?

Yesterday, we reported she spent R400,000. That’s just silly… It was actually R800,000

When you’re a student, money is hard to come by. So when the WSU accidentally drops R14m in your account, what are you supposed to do?

Treat yo’self!

We’re sure the more saintly among us would suggest investing in textbooks, or paying for sensible accommodation… but that wouldn’t be everybody’s choice:

Take Sibongile Mani, for example. The Walter Sisulu University in East London deposited an ‘erroneous’ R14m to her instead of the monthly food allowance bill she should have received – R1,400.

You can see where the confusion came from. Mani probably just thought the account had given her four extra decimal places.

Facetiousness aside, the autopsy has been carried out on what she spent her reportedly splurged R800,000 over the last five months.

What did the WSU student spend R800,000 on?

  • Multiple nights at a champagne club.
  • A new i-Phone.
  • A shopping spree of clothes.
  • She needed a handbag to match, obviously, so HAD to get a new one.
  • She channelled the spirit of Missy Elliot and got her nails done, and her hair did: New trims and manicures rounded off her lavish spending.

Just look at this. You can’t tell us she didn’t do what nearly all of us would do in the same situation? She’s missing a new Ferrari and a moat around her accommodation, but other than that, it’s a damn fine shopping list.

What next for Sibongile Mani?

The fun and games are all but over for Sibongile Mani now, though. National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) and payment company Intellimali withdrew the balance and closed the account for investigation.

A chairperson for Walter Sisulu University’s branch of the SA Student Congress has crunched the numbers on this one. Zolile Zamisa says the R14m could have covered the yearly allowance for 976 students.

Confusion continues to reign over how NSFAS, Intellimali or WSU could even afford such a payment.

Mani has been told she will have to pay back the money over ‘an indefinite period’.
