SASSA has released its payment schedule for February – but the R350 grant will no longer feature. The temporary handout first came into effect in April last year, and despite many logistical challenge, it proved to be a popular scheme.
Over six million South Africans claimed from the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) fund, but that safety net will soon be yanked away: The R350 grant expires on Sunday 31 January – meaning that new payments will no longer be generated. The DA did launch a campaign to extend these handouts, but so far, their pleas have fallen on deaf ears.
Cyril Ramaphosa said this week that the ANC has resolved to create a ‘Basic Income Grant’ for claimants, essentially replacing the R350 grant in its current form. However, government purse-strings remain tight.

Meanwhile, the SASSA branch in KwaZulu-Natal decided to reinstate 3 874 lapsed Temporary Disability Grants on Tuesday. This decision was taken to ensure the region swiftly finalizes the reapplication process – and it should also reduce the influx in the number of clients visiting SASSA offices by the end of March 2021.
“In December 2020, SASSA KwaZulu-Natal suspended 43 861 medically related lapsed grants comprising 40 875 Temporary Disability Grants (TDG) and 2 986 Care Dependency Grants (CDG).”
“Affected beneficiaries were notified to visit SASSA offices from 5 January 2021 to reapply for Disability Grants. Payment for this category will be affected in February 2021 together with the January 2021 funds.”
