Western Cape proposes hotspot-management strategy to national government

The Western Cape government says it has taken its plan for the management of COVID-19 hotspots to the National Command Council for consideration.
The province accounts for more than half of South Africa’s confirmed coronavirus cases, and has reported the bulk of the deaths related to the pandemic.
Western Cape proposes hotspot management
The Western Cape has attributed this to targetted testing of people in known hotspots, where a high number of infections have occurred.
Premier Alan Winde was one of the attendees at President Cyril Ramaphosa’s coordinating council on Saturday.
“The Western Cape presented its hotspot strategy to the group, as the provincial response to the number of infections in nine geographical areas,” Winde revealed.
“These areas – in each of the City of Cape Town’s eight sub-districts, and in Witzenberg account for a large proportion of the Western Cape’s infections. Using the data and evidence available to us, we will be able to specifically target these areas with responses from across government departments.”

South Africa has 14 355 confirmed COVID-19 cases, of which 8 404 are from the Western Cape.
The province also accounts for 149 of the country’s coronavirus-related deaths, which currently stand at 261.
One of the hardest-hit areas in the Western Cape includes the province’s economic hub, the City of Cape Town.
