EMS: Three killed and five seriously injured in head-on collision on N1 [PICS]

Western Cape EMS said 12 patients were involved in a head-on collision between a bakkie and a smaller vehicle on the N1 on Tuesday morning.

Three people were killed and five were seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident on the N1 freeway in the Western Cape on Tuesday morning, 28 September, when a bakkie and car had a head-on collision near the weighbridge in the direction of Cape Town, according to the provincial EMS.

EMS RESPONDS TO COLLISION ON N1

Western Cape Emergency Medical Services (EMS) communications officer Deanna February said the provinces’ EMS personnel were alerted to the motor vehicle accident between a Nissan Micra and a Toyota bakkie at 7:35 on Tuesday.

“The MVA occurred on the N1, 300 meters from the weighbridge in the direction of Cape Town,” said February. “It’s alleged that the two vehicles formed part of a head-on collision.”

In total, 12 patients were involved in the crash, according to EMS. Three patients – two adult women and one man – suffered fatal injuries in the head-on collision and died at the scene.

Five patients, including three adult women, a girl child, approximately 10 years old and a baby boy, believed to be two years old, sustained serious injuries. The remaining patients – three adults and another 10-year-old girl – were not seriously hurt in the accident.

The patients were transported to Worcester hospital for further treatment, according to EMS. “We would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family of the patients,” said February.

The crash was cleared at approximately 10:25, according to Cape Town FMS, which monitors traffic flows on roads in the province.
