Welkom employee shoots dead two armed business robbers

Four armed robbers allegedly hijacked a vehicle and attempted to rob a business in the Welkom CBD within the space of 15 minutes. An employee fired at the suspects with a handgun, killing two of them.

Two alleged business robbers were fatally wounded by an employee in Welkom, Free State on Thursday evening, 2 June. Two more suspects fled the scene and the police are searching for them.

WELKOM WORKER KILLS ALLEGED ARMED ROBBERS

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Captain Stephen Thakeng said four armed robbers allegedly stole cash and hijacked a vehicle moments before attempting to rob another business in the Welkom CBD.

Two of the four were fatally wounded during the second act of alleged lawlessness.

“On the 2 June 2022 at about 18:00 four unknown African men attacked, robbed cash and hi-jacked Nissan NP 200 with registration number HTS 475 FS.

“Then the same armed robbers entered a business premises in Welkom CBD at about 18:15,” explained Thakeng.

The employee at the business reportedly drew a handgun and fired shots in the direction of the armed suspects. One of them died at the scene and another succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

A gun belonging to the suspects was found inside the shop. The two remaining suspects fled the scene in the hijacked vehicle and remain at large.

The Welkom Serious and Violent Crimes Unit is investigating a case of Business Robbery and Hijacking.
