If you ever needed further proof that newspapers – and print in general – are dying a fast death in Mzansi and that digital is the way of the future, then keep on scrolling!

RIP newspapers and magazines, long live digital.

The Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) of South Africa has released its weekly / weekend newspaper circulation statistics for the three-month (quarter two) period April to June 2022.

A look at the Top 10 list of newspapers in that category shows the Sunday Times with a circulation of 112 488 was the most popular.

However!

It saw a 6% decrease in terms of a year-on-year (YOY) comparison.

There were double digit percentage drops for virtually every newspaper in the top 10.

For those interested, circulation of Daily Maverick’s Maverick 168 plummeted a staggering 73% to 8 298 now that it is no longer handed out free to Pick n Pay Smart Shoppers.

Faring better, albeit only marginally, the Mail & Guardian’s circulation dropped 29% to 8 610 on average per month.

These latest figures are a continuation of a similar trend over previous quarters – and years.

Don’t be surprised to see fewer and fewer newspapers on the shelves in your nearest bookstore, supermarket and street vendor in the near future.
