The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 2 weather warning for rain in the Western Cape on Friday, 6 May.

WESTERN CAPE WEATHER WARNING

The weather warning comes into effect from 3:00 on Saturday, 7 May and is expected to last until 14:00.

According to the weather service, rain and showers associated with a high pressure system moving behind a cold front will spread to the coastal areas of the Garden Route on Saturday.

The affected areas in the Western Cape include Mossel Bay, George and Knysna.

“Accumulations of 30 to 45mm can be expected east of Mossel Bay during the morning continuing until early afternoon,” said the weather service.

“Due to the expected rainfall amounts, there is a high likelihood of minor disruptions affecting [the aforementioned areas].”

The potential impacts include:

  • Localised flooding of susceptible informal and formal settlements. Roads may also be flooded.
  • Localised motor vehicle accidents are a possibility due to the slippery roads.
  • Difficult driving conditions are expected, especially on dirt roads.
