Weather: Heavy rain, large hail, damaging winds in Mpumalanga

The weather service said thunderstorms in Mpumalanga may produce heavy downpours and excessive lightning on Friday.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for thunderstorms in Mpumalanga on Friday, 25 November. The warning key indicates there is a high likelihood of minor weather-based impacts.

MPUMALANGA WEATHER WARNING

The weather warning is valid from 13:00 until 23:59 on Friday. Severe thunderstorms are expected over the Highveld and escarpment areas of Mpumalanga.

“These storms may produce heavy downpours, large hail, damaging winds, and excessive lightning, which will lead to localised flooding, localised disruptions of municipality and communication services, as well as injuries to humans and livestock,” said the weather service.

The potential impact of the weather includes:

  • Localised flooding of formal and/or informal settlements.
  • Difficult driving conditions due to wet roads, pooling of water on roads.
  • Debris on roads could lead to accidents and travel delays.
  • Power surges could result in localised service disruption.
  • Injuries to humans and livestock
