A bout of extreme weather in the south-east tip of the Northern Cape brought us two wild events on Tuesday afternoon. Not only was it hailing down with some almighty force, but a tornado was also spotted near the town of Richmond. The region was positively battered by the moody conditions.
Reported at approximately 15:30, the torrential weather went up a notch when a twister was spotted 10km outside of the town. It lies near the respective borders of the Western and Eastern Capes on the N1 route, and plenty of people got a good eyeful of the tornado.
People were able to spot the spiralling sight from a long distance. After much speculation, the South African Weather Service (Saws) confirmed through their social media channels that the event was indeed a tornado. We understand that no damage has been done to property, and all nearby inhabitants were declared safe.
Towards the end of 2019, several tornado events were reported in both KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. As we shift from Summer into Autumn, it seems the gloomy conditions couldn’t wait to make their mark in the Northern Cape – and there were plenty of people who caught a glimpse of nature’s breath-taking power:
