After revealing that ‘severe thunderstorms’ were on their way to Gauteng this afternoon, the SA Weather Service (SAWS) has also confirmed that similar conditions will be heading for FIVE provinces in total.

Five provinces face exposure to thunderstorms, hail and gusts on Thursday 7 October

Gauteng, North West, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and Free State have all been issued with a yellow Level 2 weather warning from 15:00 on Thursday 7 October, which will be in place until 23:00 this evening. Subsequent rain showers will persist through to Friday morning, but the wildest weather will only occur this evening,

Amongst the unsettled conditions, ‘large amounts of small hail’ and ‘damaging winds’ are threatening to wreak havoc across a majority of provinces in Mzansi. Flooded roads, difficult driving conditions, and a possible threat to livestock have all been raised as a cause for concern by SAWS.

In a statement issued earlier on Thursday afternoon, the weather agency revealed that North West and Free State would be the first to feel the force of this front, before it makes its way to Limpopo and Mpumalanga via Gauteng – and you can see a more detailed forecast for the latter of these provinces here.

“Severe thunderstorms may occur over a large area today (Thursday 07 October 2021). Expected to develop over parts of the North West and Free State spreading to Gauteng, parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga during this evening.”

“This weather pattern will continue overnight, and into tomorrow morning. Strong to damaging winds, large amounts of small hail, and heavy downpours leading to localised flooding are also expected.”
