The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 1 warning for wind and waves in the Western Cape on Friday, 27 January. The warning key indicates there is a medium likelihood of minor weather-based impacts.

STRONG WIND IN WESTERN CAPE THIS WEEKEND

The weather warning is valid from noon on Saturday until 23:59 on Sunday, 29 January.

“Strong and gusty southeasterly winds (50-60 km/h) are expected over the City of Cape Town on Saturday afternoon,” said the weather service.

While off the coast, between Lambert’s Bay and Hermanus, there will be strong southeasterly winds of between 50 to 70 km/h from Saturday afternoon. The wind is expected to persist throughout Sunday.

“Along with the strong winds, wave heights of 3.0 to 4.0 metres are expected, which will lead to rough and choppy seas resulting from quick, successive steep waves.”

The potential impact of the windy weather and rough seas include:

  • Difficulty navigating at sea.
  • Small vessels and personal watercraft are at risk of taking on water and capsizing.
  • Disruption to beachfront activities can be expected.
  • Disruption to small harbours and ports is possible for short periods.
  • Slippery roads near beaches due to sand is a possibility in False Bay.
