Good heavens, this is grim. Cape Town’s seemingly endless run of scorching-hot temperatures will extend into the weekend – and another extreme heat warning on the cards for the Western Cape.
Last week, the mercury topped 40C in rural parts of the province. However, things are set to go up a notch on Saturday 22 January, as multiple forecasters predict thermometers will top 45C in some regions of the country.
A heatwave of this severity comes with a significant threat to life, for those who don’t take precautions in such punishing conditions. Saldanha Bay and Riebeek-Wes will be the Western Cape hot-spots on Saturday, with temperatures remaining above 40C for hours on end.
North-western regions of the Western Cape will be amongst those seeing the worst of the heat. AccuWeather, meanwhile, predicts Wellington will experience highs of 46C.
Temperatures will flirt with the 40C mark on Friday across the Western Cape, but this is just the warm-up act.
Both Saturday and Sunday are likely see an extreme heat warning come into effect, as isolated areas of the Garden Route push 46C. By Monday, temperatures will cool substantially, but most areas will still contend with temperatures in the low-to-mid-thirties.
How will Cape Town fare while the rest of the province is suffering? Well, it might not be the hottest spot in the Western Cape, but highs of 31C, 35C, and 33C – on Friday, Saturday and Sunday respectively – mean that locals will be looking for creative ways to cool off while the sun continues to beat down on the Mother City.
☀️A strong upper air high pressure system will result in a sunny and drier end to the week and weekend for South Africa with extremely hot temperatures expected over the Western and Northern Cape provinces.
