WEATHER WARNING: Waves of up to 5m expected in these areas

A warning was issued for waves 5m high due to damaging winds along the coast of the Western Cape. Here is more information.

A weather warning was issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS) for waves of up to 5metres in several parts of the country.

LEVEL 2 WEATHER WARNING WAS ISSUED

This prediction is mostly for the Western Cape coast. 

The SAWS warned that difficulty in navigation at sea for small vessels and personal watercraft is likely and might lead to small vessels capsizing in the locality.

The warning is issued from Thursday to Sunday evening.

HERE ARE THE AREAS THAT WILL BE AFFECTED:

  • M_Saldanha Bay 
  • M_Table Bay
  • M_Overstrand
  • Hermanus
  • M_Cape Agulhas
  • Cape Agulhas 1
  • M_Hessequa
  • Still Bay
  • M_Mossel Bay
  • M_Bitou
  • Plettenberg Bay

The SAWS furthermore said the spring high tide might allow high energy waves to reach further onto land, causing localised coastal infrastructure damage. 

“The time of concern will be mainly near high tide on Friday and Saturday. Coastal users are at risk of being swept away from low-lying areas by infrequent, large waves. 

“Localised disruptions to beachfront activities can also be expected.” 

Small vessels are advised to seek shelter in harbours, bays, or inlets.

ICY WEATHER PREDICTED, INCLUDING SNOW

According to VoxWeather, the first cold front of ???????????????????? moved over the SW coast on Wednesday.

“The second stronger cold front arrives on Friday morning to bring scattered showers and COLD conditions to the Western and Southern Cape.”

It furthermore warned that the third cold front hit the Western Cape late on Saturday afternoon.

THE THIRD COLD FRONT WILL MAKE LANDFALL ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON

“Together with a surface trough extending over the west, showers are expected to continue throughout Saturday into Sunday. Models are indicating more than 50mm of rain expected to fall over parts of the Winelands and mountainous areas of the Western Cape.”
