The SAWS has issued a weather warning for disruptive rain and strong winds for parts of South Africa over the following days.

MORE disruptive rain and strong winds are expected over the next couple of days in parts of South Africa.

THE WEATHER WARNING HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR SEVERAL PARTS OF SA

According to SA Weather Service (SAWS), a level 4 warning for disruptive rain and a level 3 warning for strong winds has been issued for several areas in Western Cape. 

The wind, which started on Sunday, will continue until Tuesday.

The rain is expected to continue until Tuesday.

THE FOLLOWING AREAS WILL BE AFFECTED

The following areas will be affected by the strong winds: 

  • Karoo Hoogland
  • Sutherland
  • Hantam
  • Calvinia
  • Beaufort West
  • Breede Valley
  • Worcester
  • Prince Albert
  • M_City of Cape town

The SAWS warned that damage to formal/informal settlements and some structural damage are possible.

“Fallen trees may affect transport routes, properties and localized power and communication interruption. Due to dust, visibility may be reduced on the road. Some transport routes and travel services can be affected, and high-sided vehicles due to crosswind on exposed high-level roads by the wind.”

‘FLYING DEBRIS MIGHT ALSO CAUSE INJURIES’

It furthermore warned that flying debris might also cause injuries.

“Be aware of sudden cross winds if traveling, especially between buildings, fallen trees, or power lines. Ensure that all temporary structures are well anchored.” 

The following areas will be affected by the rain: 

  • Theewaterskloof
  • Grabouw
  • Overstrand
  • Hermanus
  • City of Cape Town
  • Stellenbosch

“Flooding of roads and formal/informal settlements are possible, along with damage to property, infrastructure, loss of livelihood and livestock, as well as disruption to essential services. A major disruption of traffic flow due to major roads being flooded or closed is likely. Some communities could temporarily not be accessible.” 

The SAWS warned to be cautious on roads and avoid crossing rivers and swollen streams where water is above your ankles. 

“If trapped in a vehicle during a flood, abandon it and climb to higher ground. In buildings, move valuables to a safe place above the expected flood level. Switch off electricity at the supply point to the building. Be especially cautious at night.”

TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN DRIVING

All road users are requested to take extra caution:

  • Reduce speed
  • Switch on your headlights
  • Pedestrians should be careful when crossing the road
  • Avoid crossing rivers and streams where water is above your ankles

Households were urged to open/make pathways to allow water to flow out of their yards.
