Disruptive rain and floods warning issued for Eastern Cape

Disruptive rain which could lead to flooding is expected in most parts of the Eastern Cape on Wednesday, 31 May.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning for disruptive rain and floods in most parts of the Eastern Cape.

The warning is effective until 18:00 on Wednesday, 31 May.

DISRUPTIVE RAIN EXPECTED IN EASTERN CAPE

According to the weather service, a cut-off low with a surface trough is expected to bring disruptive rainfall over large parts of the province resulting in flooding of low lying areas.

Rainfall amounts of 30 – 50mm are possible in places.

POSSIBLE IMPACTS

  • Localised flooding of susceptible settlements (both formal and informal), roads, low-lying areas and bridges.
  • Localised damage to mud-based and makeshift houses or structures.
  • Difficult and dangerous driving conditions due to slippery roads and reduced visibility.
  • Traffic disruptions due to localised flooding.
  • Localised disruption to livelihoods.

The South African Weather Service also issued the same warning for eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal. The disruptive rain warning is effective until 23:00 on Wednesday, 31 May.

Widespread showers and thundershowers are expected along the eastern parts of the province which may lead to localised flooding.

According to the weather service, some areas in the southern part of KZN have received rain from Tuesday afternoon.
