The African National Congress Youth League did not defend president Jacob Zuma because it loved him, but because he was the democratically elected president of the ANC.

This was according to ANCYL president Collen Maine, speaking at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Howard College on Saturday during the league’s eThekwini elective conference.

At all times, we must defend the ANC leadership. When we defend president Zuma, it is not because we love him or we hate him or we like him. We defend him because he is the president of the ANC, elected by the congress of the ANC,” said Maine.

“I may not have supported him, like many comrades, but once he is elected, he then becomes the president of the ANC and all of us has a responsibility to gather behind the president…whether you like it or not,” he said.

Maine said the league would not be swayed by “monopoly capital”, which had always been the enemy of the revolution.

He said the “true ANC” had always been the enemy of monopoly capital.

The most important thing is that you young people must take over the African National Congress. The reality is that young people must lead the revolution,” he said.

He said that “old comrades” were still wanted in the ANC, but they must realise that times had changed and they had to adapt to changes.

History had shown that the old did not lead revolutions, and some of the current leadership had become too comfortable and forgotten the struggle.

“We are driven in German cars and we forget about everything else, we are forgetting that our people are poor and go to bed without eating,” he said.

Young people are the only people who are able to lead successful revolutions.
