Why is the Minister of Electricity, Kgosientsho David Ramokgopa, buying a 50-year-old generator from the Netherlands?

This is the question everyone has been asking after Ramokgopa recently revealed that they are in the process of buying a 50-year-old generator from the Netherlands.

Ramokgopa, following a month-long tour of Eskom power stations and meetings with its executives, presented a multi-point plan to ease load shedding to the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) this weekend.
RAMOKGOPA GAVE AN UPDATE ON THE ENERGY CRISIS
It is clear that Ramokgopa has learned nothing new.

Some of the highlights of his plan include the 50-year-old generator from the Netherlands.

Eskom will focus on its five worst-performing power stations. Some additional power will be imported.

R30 MILLION IN DIESEL PROCUREMENT
Ramokgopa also touched on remotely switching off geysers and exempting national key points from load shedding.
He also said they have R30 billion in diesel procurement.
“We have confirmed about R30 billion that’s available for diesel procurement.”
NO END TO LOAD SHEDDING BY THE END OF 2023
To fund the R30 billion – easily at least 50% more than was spent on diesel in its last financial year, Ramokgopa says Eskom will use funds from the 18.65% tariff increase approved by Nersa and those allocated to it in February’s budget.
Ramokgopa also admitted that it was not “technically possible” to end load shedding by the end of 2023.

HE WANTS TO REMOTELY SWITCH OF GEYSERS
“Unfortunately, is not possible to end load shedding tomorrow, and technically not possible to end load shedding by the end of 2023,” he said.
“That is why we are in pains to illustrate the kind of steps we are taking – the winter period now and the next six months and going into 18 months. But we will do everything possible to ensure that its intensity is not as severe so that we get the economy going.”
