Watch: Thousands march in Cape

On Wednesday, The Muslim Judicial Council of South Africa took to the streets of Cape Town to call on the government to cut all diplomatic ties with Israel and even expel the Israeli ambassador from the country.

TimesLIVE reports that over 4000 members of the Muslim community marched together with other dignitaries like Mandla Mandela. The group was protesting the securitisation of the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.

The march went from Zinatul Islam mosque in District Six, all the way to Parliament. A memorandum addressed to the minister of International relations was then handed over.

The former president of The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC), Sheik Ebrahim Gabriels said that the march took place in order to show solidarity with the people of Palestine.

“We want the world to know that al-Aqsa is not only sacred to Palestinians but to every Muslim and that’s why we are here.”

The MJC wants the South African government to close the Israeli embassy immediately. The council says that Israel has carried out “continuous desecrations” on the Muslim holy site.
