Has someone ever told you that something will only happen once in a blue moon?

You’re in luck: September 30 is a special type of planetary event that’s named after one of Southern Africa’s most proud heritage symbols… The Crane!

Blue Crane Moon: September 30th

Mark your calendars for September 30: it’s a very special type of full moon.

September is the Blue Crane Moon, according to the Centre for Astronomical Heritage (CfAH).

 Each moon appearance of the year gets its own name to remember South Africa’s heritage. October is the Whale Moon together with the Elephant Moon.

The Blue Crane Moon is special because it’s celebrated during Heritage Month. There are more reasons why this September moon is an important one.

Why the Blue Crane Moon is Special

This is called the Blue Crane Moon, but it’s also a blue moon in September: this means that there are two full moons in the same year.

It is named after the Crane, because it’s South Africa’s national bird. The Crane is known for nesting from September, making it the perfect name for this month’s second special moon.

According to the CfAH, the Blue Crane Moon is also special because it appears only twice between the years 2020 to 2050.

Don’t forget to look up at the sky on the 30th of this month!

What are Heritage Moons?

Heritage moons are named by CfAH to remember the country’s unique history of our country and its star system.

Other months, like October, have moons named after other important parts of South Africa’s heritage. The Whale and Elephant moon(s) happen later this year.

Based in Cape Town, the CfAH hoptes to preserve information about South Africa’s important astronomical heritage.
