Paramedics said a pilot was killed when a light aircraft crashed on a farm in Steelepoort next to Nelspruit Airport on Monday.

A pilot was killed when a light aircraft crashed on a farm in Steelepoort next to Nelspruit Airport on Monday.

According to Emer-G-Med paramedics, the accident happened before 16:00 on Monday.

“Just before 16h00 on Monday, Emer-G-Med paramedics, together with multiple emergency service agencies, responded to the scene of a light aircraft crash in the vicinity of the old Nelspruit Airport.

“On arrival on the scene, the aircraft was found in ruins. The pilot and only occupant were declared dead on arrival of paramedics.”

THE LIGHT AIRCRAFT ACCIDENT HAPPENED ON MONDAY AFTERNOON

The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) spokesperson Sisa Majola said the accident occurred at a private farm in Steelepoort next to Nelspruit Airport in the Mpumalanga Province.

“Our investigations team is on-site to start the process of evidence collection and to gather the information that will define the scope of the investigation.

“There was one occupant onboard who sustained fatal injuries. The aircraft itself sustained substantial damage.”

IT IS NOT YET CLEAR WHERE THE AIRCRAFT DEPARTED

Majola said it is not clear where the aircraft departed from or its intended destination.

“Should a critical safety issue be identified, the investigating team will immediately notify relevant parties to take appropriate action.

“A preliminary report will be issued within 30 days from the day of this accident.”

Last year, two young pilots killed when their aircraft crashed on a farm in Kinkelbos were identified as 33-year-old Sudanese national Oyit Ajack and 25-year-old Malawian National Bhadresh Kadiwar.

Both pilots died on impact after their light aircraft crashed on a farm in Kinklebos.

Family and friends will gather on Wednesday to celebrate the lives of Oyit and Bhadresh.
