Imposters and scammers are out there pretending to be City of Tshwane officials, with some posing as fire safety officials while an RDP scam was also doing the rounds at the same time.

TSHWANE IMPOSTERS TARGET RDP APPLICANTS

Misleading messages have been doing the rounds on social media, requesting those who applied for RDP houses in Tshwane between 1996 and 2022 to collect their house keys. The scam also states that people should come forward to check the status of their application for housing subsidies.

“These messages have not been issued by the City of Tshwane and are therefore untrue. The public is cautioned not to fall for this scam. Residents are reminded that the National Housing Needs Registers is the only legitimate platform to register for an RDP house.”

FIRE SAFETY SCAMMERS DEMAND MONEY

The public is complaining about a group of unknown people claiming to be fire safety officials and demanding money and payment from residents.

These imposters claim the payment is for services offered by the City of Tshwane, said Emergency Services Department spokesperson Charles Mabaso.

“The Emergency Services Department does not accept any form of cash payment for services offered and does not authorise any of its staff to accept any form of payment for services rendered.”

Instead, the City bills residents through its billing system. Payments for fire safety services are only made into the provided bank account.

Tshwane’s emergency department is investigating the allegations, said Mabaso.

BACKLOG IN TSHWANE’S HOUSING APPLICATIONS

Tshwane faces a major backlog of housing applications and is still dealing with those registered from 1996 to 2000.

But those who wish to register and apply can still do so by visiting their nearest regional office, Tau said.

“Applicants are welcome to check if their names appear on the National Housing Needs Register by visiting or calling their regional offices.”
