WATCH: More than 100 firefighters fighting raging Overstrand fire

More than 100 firefighters were still battling to contain the raging fire in the Overberg District on Saturday evening.

A fire in the Overberg District was still raging on Saturday evening.

WHEN DID THE FIRE START?

According to the Fire Protection Association in the Overberg District, the wildfire was reported in the early hours of Saturday morning.

This comes a day after a high fire risk warning was issued. The alert said dangerous fire weather conditions were predicted for the weekend.

By Saturday evening, the authorities were still struggling to contain the wildfire.

NO EVACUATION ORDER HAS BEEN ISSUED YET

According to the Overstrand Municipality, no evacuation order has been issued yet.

“We are aware of one voluntary evacuation. Should evacuations become necessary, our Law Enforcement personnel will respond to ensure a safe and orderly process. Please keep your windows closed,” it said.

RESIDENTS HAVE BEEN INHALING SMOKE CLOUDS

The town’s residents have been inhaling most of the smoke clouds since Saturday morning.

“Kleinmond received the bulk of the smoke from this fire today. The visible fire lines in the mountains opposite Lamloch and above the western side of the town are concerning. We have deployed a large part of our resources on those lines and are busy with active fire fighting,” the Overstrand Municipality said.

THE RESIDENTS HAS STILL NOT COMPLETELY RECOVERED SINCE 2019

According to reports, the community has still not completely recovered from the devastating fire in 2019.

At least one person died as a result of the fire. Authorities confirmed that the woman from Pringle Bay died from inhaling the smoke.
