A US man is winning the internet and is being hailed as a neighbourhood hero after he successfully used a wheelie bin to fight off and capture an alligator that was spotted earlier loitering in a neighbour’s front yard.

“Let me know when the head goes back inside [the bin]. Let me know. Somebody let me know when the head goes inside of the thing,” he says to onlookers,” he says in a video clip that has gone viral on social media. At some point in the video, someone yells, “The head is in!” – this prompts the man to then drop the lid onto the alligator’s head and turning the trash can upright.

The man has since been identified as 26-year-old Eugene Bozzi, an army veteran based in Mount Dora, Florida.

Bozzi said it was the kids in his neighbourhood who told him about the alligator, which he first thought was baby version – but soon realised he was wrong.

“I said, ‘No, I’m removing it because he’s probably hungry. The only thing that came to my mind was to protect my kids and the other children outside,” Bozzi said in an interview with USA Today.

He told the publication that he had a bad angle, which would have made it easier for the creature to attack him and the consequences could have potentially been deadly.

“I used the front like a hippo mouth. I saw that he was more timid and he was backing down, so that’s why I knew I had the advantage,” he said.
