Former Springbok rugby captain Jean de Villiers has been praised for catching a thief who had stolen goods from a butchery in Paarl.

WATCH AS THE FORMER CAPTAIN CHASES DOWN THE THIEF

Jean was at The Boer and Butcher when he saw a man pocketing sweets and then leaving the shop without paying. 

Images of the incident, which took place at the Boer & Butcher shop on 23 January, are currently circulating on social media and have seen the rugby icon hailed for his heroic actions.

According to media reports, Jean, who led the national team on 37 occasions, grew suspicious of a man slipping sweets into his pockets before walking out of the shop.

JEAN NOTICED THE MAN SLIPPING SWEETS INTO HIS POCKETS

Speaking to the media, store owner Edu Hanekom said that Jean and his wife, Marlie, both regular customers, were at the checkout when they first spotted the man acting suspiciously.

When the man did not pay for the sweets, Jean followed him out of the store and then started to chase after him.

The thief was brought back to the store and handed over to a security guard.

“Leaked footage” of the incident was posted on Thursday by the Boer & Butcher shop.

The store owner was reportedly grateful to Jean that the Springbok still had some speed in him.

THE OWNER WAS GRATEFUL THAT JEAN STILL HAD SOME SPEED IN HIM

“We are very grateful for Jean’s actions. It was quite a thing when a former Springbok captain arrived with a thief.”
