A desperate scramble for information has been sparked in KZN, after a viral video captured the moment a male taxi passenger assaulted a female rider over the weekend. The brutal exchange saw the aggressor land several punches on the woman, identified as ‘Fezeka’ by a fellow commuter.
The pummeling, which makes for a very difficult watch, is allowed to carry on uninterrupted until Fezeka herself tries to fight back. She strikes the man in retaliation, and after almost a minute passes, another passenger finally attempts to calm the situation. Tensions, however, had boiled over well in advance.
The taxi was on a route from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. Little is known about the perpetrator, but an enraged online community is desperate for answers. In a country with as much gender-fuelled violence as South Africa, incidents such as these cannot be allowed to go unchallenged. It’s understood that SAPS has been made aware of the footage.

The video has been shared hundreds of times across Twitter, and thousands of views have been racked up on Sunday. There is hope that the spread of the footage will help bring the male passenger to justice, but several unconfirmed reports from eyewitnesses claim that the pair had been arguing furiously beforehand.
Needless to say, social media users weren’t shy when it came to venting their anger about the incident:
tf they let this guy do this to her, I’m happy she fought back. Disgusted at everybody who’s watch and that lady who’s laughing!— Sihle Msiza (@SihleMsiza9) September 19, 2021
