WATCH AS HUNDREDS OF ANIMALS IN DISTRESS ARE RESCUED FROM THE MUD

A dam wall at Jagersfontein diamond mine collapsed on 11 September 2022.

Three people have been confirmed dead, and four, including a pregnant woman, are in critical condition. Twenty-eight others were injured while several houses were swept away.

“Words fail to describe exactly the crisis unfolding in front of our eyes.

“Team Bloemfontein SPCA already left in the early hours of Sunday morning to Jagersfontein, where a wall of a Mine dam collapsed. Nothing could really prepare us for the tragedy that took place. We were joined by Virginia SPCA and Kimberley SPCA.

“So many people and animals were unable to escape the force of the mud and water that overwhelmed the small community in a matter of seconds.”

said Reinet Meyer Senior Inspector en Manager of the Bloemfontein SPCA.

RESCUE TEAMS ARE STILL BUSY IN JAGERSFONTEIN

She said as inspectors, field assistants, and officers made their way through the tons of mud, desperate animals in despair were omnipresent.

“We stopped at nothing to help them. They were all just too tired and too exhausted and surrendered themselves into the arms of our team.

“Sadly, so many have already succumbed, especially wildlife. The numbers and devastation are unthinkable.”

Reinet

Reinet said a total of 586 animals were rescued, including dogs, cats, pigs, chickens, cows, geese, and wildlife.

“Our hearts are with every animal during this disaster, and we keep finding animals hiding in homes, roofs, and trees. Difficult places to reach, but we manage to get to them. We remove them from the mud and give them a quick wash to remove all excess mud.

“We know that cats don’t like water, but by removing the mud from them, we can see the relief and give us a purr for appreciation.”

HERE IS HOW YOU CAN HELP:

Reinet pleaded for donations from the public.

“We cannot even try to attempt to do this on our own and really need the support of our animal warriors to help cover our fuel and Veterinary expenses. Please, no amount is too small. Food for dogs, cats, poultry, and farm animals and blankets are also needed. Whatever you are able to assist with will help us to continue to assist the animals in Jagersfontein.

“The task is immense, but we will continue until we have assisted them all.

“Please keep the people of Jagersfontein, the animals, and our Team in your thoughts.”
