Being typical South Africans, some people saw the lighter side of the incident and started making jokes. A couple of people mocked Afrikaans singer Steve Hofmeyr.

They referred to the singer’s angry plea with DSTV viewers to “braai their decoders” after his songs were removed from airplay. He sweetended the challange by offering a R10 000 prize.

MultiChoice decided to ban his music following continued utterances that had a racist undertone. Several Hofmeyr supporters pledged to not support DSTV by burning their decoders and satellite dishes.

Some of the singer’s supporters took to social media to post themselves in the act. A Twitter user mocked Hofmeyr writing: “When some take the “braai your decoder” to seriously. #dankieSteve #multichoice.”
