Sadly, the driver passed away after suffering several gunshot wounds as a result of the incident. It’s understood that the guard had managed to avoid getting bombed, but lost control of the vehicle during his getaway attempt.

Brigadier Novela Potelwa addressed the media on Thursday afternoon, once police had assessed the crime scene. It was confirmed that the suspects were able to make off with a ‘substantial amount of cash’ before fleeing the scene in two cars.

“Unknown suspects shot and killed the security guard who was waiting in a cash transporting vehicle. He had driven away after being shot and crashed into a nearby home. A substantial amount of cash was taken as the suspects fled in a black Corsa and a white VW Golf GTI.”

Thugs undeterred by lockdown or COVID

The drama unfolded in Malmesbury Road, near the intersection of the N1 and N7 in Cape Town. Although cash-in-transit robberies are way down on last year’s figures, a large reason for that is down to the strict lockdown period.

However, criminals have not stopped operating in the age of coronavirus. In fact, many have become more desperate and brazen according to the experts. These Welgelegen robbers now face charges of murder, attempted murder, and business robbery as they remain at large on Thursday afternoon.
