Truth really is stranger than fiction at times, not least the fact that an aeroplane managed to make an emergency landing on the usually busy N2 freeway on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast…and safely take off again.

KZN Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane said the pilot had been forced to make an emergency landing on the N2 South Coast freeway near Mtwalume on Saturday.

“It as an emergency landing because the aircraft had run out of fuel,” Ncalane said.

Ncalane said road traffic officers had been dispatched to the scene after the aircraft had landed on the N2.

“The situation was contained and after managing to get refuelled it managed to get going again. Fortunately, no one sustained any injuries,” Ncalane said.

He said it was fortunate that the road was quiet at the time and the landing did not result in an accident.

A source who asked to remain anonymous relayed the details of the emergency landing incident.

“A light aircraft experienced difficulty while flying over the Mtwalume area. The pilot was then forced to do an emergency landing on the N2 freeway,” the source said.

“Once the aircraft had landed it was established that the aircraft had some mechanical difficulty and after fuel was brought to the aircraft the pilot then taxied onto the N2 Freeway and took off in a northerly direction towards Durban,” he said.

The pilot is believed to be based in the Howick area of KwaZulu-Natal.

The N2 freeway on the South Coast has also been in other news recently after violent protestors took to the highway in recent weeks. Residents blocked the highway with burning debris and trees as they protested about a lack of service delivery following repeated water outages.
