Up there with some of the world’s most dangerous journeys.

Cape Town taxi violence

If you read the headline and thought this taxi situation couldn’t get any worse, well, you were wrong. The driver of a 14 seater taxi carrying 32 passengers, was unlicensed, AND 14 of the 32 passengers were standing.

The taxi was impounded by officers on Thursday after they spotted the driver committing “several violations” as he was ferrying passengers around Cape Town. Not only did the driver lose his taxi, he was also arrested. JP Smith, Mayoral committee member for safety, security and social services, spoke to News24.

“While I understand that there is immense pressure on the public transport system, as well as the people who rely on it to get to work, there is no excuse for this type of behaviour. I shudder to think of the consequences if that vehicle had to be in a collision,”

“Incidents like these do nothing for the reputation of the taxi industry, and so I also call on owners and associations to address this type of lawlessness.”

Thankfully, all of the passengers escaped unharmed, probably extra late because their driver got arrested but certainly safe and sound. You can check out the video for yourself, below.
