The SA Weather Services has issued a warning for SEVERE thunderstorms TODAY in these parts of the country. Here is more information.

Level 1 and 2 warnings for SEVERE thunderstorms were issued for TODAY in these parts of the country.

LEVEL 1 AND 2 WARNINGS FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WERE ISSUED

The SA Weather Service (SAWS) warned that localised damage to infrastructure, settlements, property, and vehicles is possible. 

“Minor vehicle accidents may occur due to slippery roads in the presence of hail. Localised service disruptions are possible due to power surges/disruptions that can be expected.”

THE FOLLOWING AREAS WILL BE AFFECTED TODAY BY THE WARNINGS

These areas will be affected: 

  • !Kheis / Groblershoop
  • Siyancuma / Griquastad
  • Siyathemba / Prieska
  • Thembelihle / Hopetown
  • Emthanjeni / De Aar
  • Renosterberg / Petrusville
  • Umsobomvu / Noupoort
  • Emalahleni / Lady Frere
  • Engcobo / Ncobo
  • Intsika Yethu / Cofimvaba
  • Raymond Mhlaba – Adelaide / Adelaide
  • Amahlathi / Stutterheim
  • Great Kei / Komga
  • Mbhashe / Dutywa
  • Intsika Yethu / Cofimvaba

The SAWS advised the public to stay indoors if possible and away from metal objects.

STAY INDOORS AND AWAY FROM METAL OBJECTS

“Do not seek shelter under trees or tall objects. Do not go fishing or play golf, as both the golf clubs and fishing rods are good conductors of electricity. 

“Be aware that any combination of hail, strong winds, heavy lightning and/or heavy downpours can accompany the storms.”

It also issued a weather warning for veld fires in several parts of the country.

A WARNING FOR VELD FIRES WAS ALSO ISSUED

According to the SAWS, conditions are such that the FDI index is above 75. 

“Under these conditions, fires may develop and spread rapidly, resulting in damage to property and possible loss of human and/or animal life.” 

These areas might be affected by veld fires: 

  • Khâi-Ma / Pofadder
  • Hantam / Calvinia
  • Karoo Hoogland / Sutherland
  • Beaufort West
  • Laingsburg
  • Prince Albert

The SAWS urged the public that fire teams, labour and equipment should be placed on stand-by. 

  • FIRE TEAMS SHOULD BE PLACED ON STANDBY

“The first sign of smoke, every possible measure should be taken in order to bring the fire under control in the shortest possible time.”
