Want to prevent terrorism? ‘Allow everyone to carry guns in public’, says Interpol

The threat of Islamic extremists and fundamentalists is pushing governments further than they’ve ever had to go in terms of fighting crime. What if we lessen the burden and put more guns in the hands of civilians so they can fight back?

Contentious issue… check. Possibly the biggest can of worms since Iraq… check. The question being asked globally, however, is how much damage would terrorists be able to do if every person around them is armed as well? You’d be sitting with millions of armed civilians able to not only defend themselves, but each other as well.

According to Interpol, ‘If guns are illegal, only violent criminals, fanatic Jihadists and our over-worked, understaffed police will have them’.

One of the most powerful arguments for the relaxation of gun ownership laws globally is Switzerland. One of the countries with the most lax gun ownership laws, they also have the lowest rate of homicide. The United States would of course be the opposite of that, but you’d also have to look at the population size and density. Or you could just blame the devil, infidels or TV games… much easier than arguing a point don’t you think?

In an interview with ABC news, Interpol Secretary General Ronald Noble said that “the U.S. and the rest of the democratic world is at a security crossroads” and motioned that should we arm civilians, as that might be a solution.

Noble went on to say that there really are only two workable options for defending folks. One is we expand our security forces on a massive scale… which isn’t really all that feasible; or we arm the very people, the so called “soft targets” that Islamic fighters are increasingly targeting. Beefing up perimeters around social areas like shopping centres is another option, so it’ll look like we’re living in The Walking Dead.

Said Noble: “Societies have to think about how they’re going to approach the problem. One is to say we want an armed citizenry; you can see the reason for that. Another is to say the enclaves are so secure that in order to get into the soft target you’re going to have to pass through extraordinary security.”

Regardless of how we think this problem is to be solved, a fair amount of thought should be given to every possible opportunity. Although, playing cops and robbers with, well… terrorists might not be such a bad idea. What y’all think?
