SOUTH AFRICAN STUDENT’S FATAL FALL IN CHINA RULED AN ACCIDENT

In an unrelated matter, South African engineering student Kgothatso Mdunana fell to her death from the 13th floor of a friend’s flat in Hangzhou, China, last month. Mdunana was in the final year of her civil engineering course at the Shandong University of Technology and was months away from graduation before her untimely passing.

After a probe, the Chinese police ruled out “the possibility of homicide after careful investigation.”

“The Embassy deeply regretted the tragic loss of Ms. Mdunana, expressed sincere sympathy to her families and is providing assistance in dealing with the aftermath to the full extent of, including facilitation of the recent legal documents for the repatriation of the remains,” said the spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in South Africa on 24 May.

Mdunana’s remains are being kept at the Haining Funeral Parlour in Zheijiang Province. The repatriation process is expected to take place this week.

The family could not afford the staggering fee to bring the student’s body home but after turning to fellow South Africans for help they managed to raise more than the R350 000 required to bring home Kgothatso’s remains.

An anonymous donor pledged the full amount required after several donations were already made – pushing the total raised by BackaBuddy to more than R540 000.
