Smith said VW Polo models are followed by Toyota Hilux, Toyota Quantum, Toyota Corolla, Isuzu KB series, Volkswagen Golf, Ford Ranger and in 8th place the BMW 3 Series.

“These are according to a previous report by the Road Traffic Management Corporation,” he said.

THE MAIN CAUSE OF ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS

He went on to say alcohol plays a major role in vehicle accidents, with already 45 persons arrested over the past few days for driving while under the influence.

“Let’s all do our part. Be conscious and aware while driving, remain alert and stay off the cellphone. Even when stopping at an intersection, dropping your guard while checking your messages makes you vulnerable to smash and grabs.
Be responsible. Don’t drink and drive,” he warned.

On the alcohol topic, Smith has also indicated that the Law Enforcement Liquor Enforcement Unit has by far taken receipt of 14 088 bottles of confiscated alcohol, amounting to 7 043 litres.

This is for the period 18 October to 28 December.

“Sadly, these statistics trump the 2019 figures by quite a stretch – back then we were on just over four thousand litres, and half the number of bottles confiscated thus far this year.
Alcohol confiscations are a big talking point each year, and while many make light of it, it is actually an indictment on our society and its dysfunctional relationship with alcohol.
We remind the public yet again, that alcohol is prohibited in public open spaces, including all of the City’s beaches. Anyone caught flouting the rules will be fined and their alcohol will be confiscated.
For safety’s sake, please do not drink and drive or walk, ever, and do not consume alcohol in public spaces, particularly around water bodies,” Smith further warned.
