The last seen notice of one of the victims that were brutally murdered in Vlakfontein showed that she was online on Monday at 11:04.

Nomfundo Khoza is the 28-year-old school teacher that fell victim to the brutal murder that she, her two children, the 11-year-old girl, Karabo, and the two-year-old boy, Nkanyiso; and four other members of her family suffered.

Vlakfontein update: Nomfundo Khoza’s WhatsApp was active after her murder

Friends of Nomfundo spoke with us and revealed that the last communication they had with her was on Saturday, 27 October.

It is believed that at that time, Nomfundo was still alive. The same can not be said about the other six victims. MEC for Community Safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane confirmed, on Wednesday, that some of the victims had been killed weeks ago.

We also know that Nomfundo and her children did not live at the house in Vlakfontein. However, at this moment, it is not known how her body and that of her children ended up buried beneath heaps of sand inside the house.

Sources very close to the family have sent us screenshots of their WhatsApp interactions with Nomfundo and as of Thursday, the last seen notice on her profile indicates that she was last online on Monday, 29 October.

We understand that, based on the information that was provided by the MEC, Nomfundo was deemed to have passed away on Sunday, 28 October.

Therefore, the fact that she was online presents two possibilities: It’s either the phone was in the custody of the family and the authorities or it was being used by one of the suspects involved in the case.

The two people that are considered suspects, in this case, are Sibusiso Ernest Khoza, the young Zimbabwean national who allegedly lured his way into the family’s lives three months prior to the murders, and the boyfriend of Nomfundo’s mother, Mbali Khoza.

The boyfriend, since Monday, has been in the custody of the police. Sibusiso, on the other hand, is still at large and police have recruited the services of the priority investigations unit (PIU) to locate him and bring him in for questioning.

These are the screenshots that were sent to us by our sources, who have asked to remain anonymous in fear for their safety.

What you are looking at are three separate WhatsApp accounts where Nomfundo’s profile noted that she was last seen on Monday at 11:04.

We have further evidence that proves that whoever was using her phone was pretending to be Nomfundo. One of our sources was able to ascertain this information with a close friend of Nomfundo, who confirmed that on Monday, Nomfundo’s WhatsApp account was active.

According to the friend, the person was chatting to her close friends, trying to suggest that Nomfundo was still alive and well.

In the screenshot below, the friend states in Zulu that

“You are right, he was using her WhatsApp account, pretending to be her and trying to suggest that she was still alive. This continued until we noticed that this was not Nomfundo using the account. He went offline as soon as we probed about who it was that was using her phone”.

Gauteng police are expected to make an announcement tonight or tomorrow morning about more details pertaining to the case and we will be there to update you as the information trickles in.
