Sibusiso Ernest Khoza and Fita Khupe have yet to stand trial for allegedly murdering seven people, including three women and four children, in a home in Vlakfontein.

The two suspects were arrested a week after the bodies of the seven members of the Khoza family were found buried beneath heaps of sand inside the home.

Sibusiso, who was at large, was captured trying to enter Limpopo. He was found with two of the deceased women’s bank cards and identity information showing that his real name is Vusi Mabaso.

Vlakfontein murder suspects case moved to Pretoria Magistrate’s Court

Court proceedings were set to continue this week at the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court, where Magistrate Maggie van der Merwe was prepared to hear submissions from the defence regarding their bid to apply for bail.

However, power outages in the court have halted proceedings. This has forced the Magistrate to move the case to Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.

It was heard, in the suspects’ preliminary court appearance that Sibusiso was not interested in applying for bail, and that he would remain in custody for the duration of the trial.

However, it appears that he has had a change of heart and is trying to make the application.

The motivation behind this, at least for Van der Merwe, is that the defendants deserve a fair judicial process and this delay is not providing them with that right.

The two suspects will have to remain in custody until the resumption of the application takes place in Pretoria. Khupe faces multiple charges of murder and theft while Sibusiso faces additional charges of sexual assault.
