Verstappen calls Russell ‘d***head’ following Baku Sprint Race

Russell, who finished in fourth place said he was taken aback by Verstappen’s behaviour when they stepped out of the car.

Max Verstappen was left fuming at George Russell following Saturday’s Azerbaijan GP Sprint Race.

The Dutchman went on to call the Mercedes Driver a ‘d***head’ after the two drivers came to blows.

Verstappen started the sprint from 3rd position but was attacked by Russell as soon as the lights went out. The two went wheel-to-wheel across in the first three corners.

After some contact at Turn 2, Verstappen had to give up the position on the outside of Turn 3 and struck the wall, which saw huge damage to his car but managed to carry on for the rest of the 17 laps.

The Redbull driver though, managed to reclaim his position by passing Russell after the Safety Car restart.

After the race, there was a  frosty exchange between Verstappen and Russell with both drivers going on to give their thoughts on the battle.

Russell explained to Verstappen that he struggled with grip but Verstappen was having none of it and even told the British driver he should expect the same treatment. As Russell was walking away, the two-time F1 champion called him a d***head.

Verstappen says the two didnt clear the air

Asked if the talk with Russell cleared things up, Verstappen told reporters that nothing was clarified.

“No, it’s not clarified,” sighed the reigning World Champion.  “I just don’t understand why you need to take some much risk on Lap 1. Understeering into my sidepod, created a hole.

“We all have cold tyres, it’s all easy to lock up, but in his beautiful way of explaining, ‘Oh mate, locked up, look at the onboard’, it doesn’t make sense. It’s fine, we still got into P3, and got some good points, but it is what it is.”

Russell, who finished in fourth place said he was taken aback by Dutch’s behaviour when they stepped out of the car.

“I don’t really know if it was a chat,” Russell commented. “I was quite surprised, I thought he was coming over to say ‘good battle’, to be honest.
