The new week has presented itself with what can be regarded as the second wave of the scandal that surrounds VBS Mutual Bank.

The Star Early Edition has reported that ANC leaders have met on Monday in Limpopo with officials over the validity of the allegations made against most of their comrades in the looting of almost R2-billion in VBS money.

The ruling party, on Sunday, took a different stance to that of other parties that have been, in some capacity, implicated in the VBS saga.

The ANC revealed that it was not sure whether it had received any funding from the now-defunct VBS bank.

This was after the former chairperson of South Africa’s first black-owned bank, Tshifhiwa Matodzi, named the party together with other opposition parties such as the SACP, the DA and the EFF, who may have benefitted from the bank through sponsorship.

Pule Mabe, the ANC’s national spokesperson, confirmed that he and the party’s leaders were aware of the allegations made against them.

“We are aware of these allegations and we are trying to ascertain from the office of the treasurer whether they are indeed true or not. My answer cannot be a yes or a no. I am still waiting for the records. These are serious allegations, so we have to be careful.

“I will say no today and then tomorrow find information that will make me have to change my statement. Let us wait. Once I get the documents, I will be able to say”, Mabe exclaimed.
