Vacationers warned to practice caution after six-year-old drowns at Wilderness Beach

Authorities warn holidaymakers to stay safe this festive season.

Wilderness Beach is all the hype during the festive season. The sun is out and holidaymakers rush to the coastal part of the Garden Route to enjoy the cool waters of the beach with their guns out.

However, a recent tragedy that struck a local family has forced local authorities to send out a warning to vacationers.

A six-year-old boy’s body was found on the beach by paramedics and lifesavers. According to the family, the boy was out enjoying the waters with his sister.

It was his sister that alerted people of the fact that the boy had drowned. Emergency personnel rushed to the boy’s aid, as he laid on the sand, his body motionless.

“The ER24 paramedics, together with Sea Rescue medics and a senior lifeguard, continued resuscitation efforts on the child. The child was transported to hospital by ER24 ambulance with CPR continuing en route to hospital, where CPR continued in hospital.

Sadly, after all efforts to resuscitate the child were exhausted, he was declared deceased,” said National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) in a statement.

The Garden Route National Park spokesperson, Nandi Mgwandlamba stressed the importance of practicing safety on beaches during the festive season.

Stabbing on the beach intensifies worry

“We’re advising all visitors to exercise caution and to swim where lifeguards are on duty. Make sure you only swim between red and yellow flags.” she stated.

As if that was not enough bad news for the community, authorities also revealed that there had been an attack on a man on the beach.

According to Eyewitness News, the details are sketchy at this point but the incident happened shortly after the boy’s body was driven away by the ambulance.
