The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies revealed on Tuesday, that the South African Post Office (SAPO) has fired the man arrested for Uyinene Mrwetyana’s murder and rape, this action follows a few weeks since the 19-year-old student was laid to rest on 7 September 2019.

SAPO knew that the ex-employee was a convicted criminal

On Friday, the special board established for the investigation of the gruesome murder of Mrwetyana concluded their investigation, and Minister Ndabeni-Abrahams declared that action needs to be taken against those who knew the ex-employee was a convicted criminal.

The 42-year-old man has been arrested for Mrwetyana’s murder and rape after he confessed in court, and his next court appearance is scheduled for 5 November 2019.

The man was also flagged by the State Security Agency as a convicted criminal, and the Post Office hired him anyway; the accused’s criminal record proved he had a 1998 car hijacking conviction with an eight-year sentence which he served only five years as the three were suspended.

Ndabeni-Abrahams announced “harsh action” needs to taken by the government

The accused is also reported to have been previously implicated of sexual offences, the Minister also mentioned earlier this month that “harsh action” needs to be taken by the government.

“We are committed to one thing; that harsh action has to be taken both by the government and of course we hope that the judiciary, without undermining its processes, will act harshly. It’s high time we shouldn’t be thinking about protecting people who kill women.”
