Uyinene Mrwetyana: Man arrested in connection with missing student due in court

The police ensures the interrogation of the suspect will bring new information.

The 42-year-old man, who was arrested on Friday over the disappearance of University of Cape Town student, Uyinene Mrwetyana, is expected in court on Monday, 2 September.

The suspect is expected to appear at Wynberg Magistrate Court

The man is anticipated to make his first appearance at the Wynberg Magistrate court, and it is yet to be revealed what the suspect has been arrested for, or how he may be involved in Mrwtyana’s disappearance.

The police confirmed the arrest on Saturday, stating that the man was apprehended in Claremont, and have since been secretive regarding the investigation.

SAPS ensures the interrogation will bring new information

The Western Cape Police spokesperson, Brigadier Novela Potelwa, mentioned that the search continues for the missing student, and the suspect will be interrogated for further information.

“The South African Police Service detectives have been hard at work pursuing several leads. In the early hours of Friday morning, the team supported by Western Cape Flying Squad members arrested a 42-year-old suspect in Claremont.”

The search and prayers continue for Uyinene Mrwetyana

It is reported an unidentified body was discovered in Khayelitsha a few days prior, and the police were awaiting an autopsy and DNA results. However, there has been no proof that the police believe it is related to the Mrwetyana missing person’s case.

In a statement released by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Mamokgethi Phakeng stated that the search for Uyinene Mrwetyana, a missing student, continues to intensify.

The first-year film student’s disappearance has caused a national outcry, as supporters continue to hold prayer vigils across the country and pour out their frustration regarding the situation on social media.

Uyinene Mrwetyana: The last known location

The student was last seen in Claremont, at 14:00 wearing a brown corduroy baggy pants and a black handbag. Mrwetyana lives in Roscommon House, a UCT residence situated in Claremont. It is also reported that she was later seen around 17:00 at, or near a hair salon in Mowbray.

Mrwetyana is described to have a septum nose ring piercing that has two balls on it. It is further reported that she went to the post office on Saturday, 24 August, and no one has seen or heard anything from her since then.

Cape Town police are still requesting that anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Uyinene Mrwetyana, to contact their nearest police station immediately.
