US Election: Who are we waiting for – and when will we get a winner?

A number of states are yet to declare their final results. We may not have a definitive answer from the US Election for some time to come.

Whether you’ve stayed up through the night, or woke up to what seems to be a dead heat, the US Election has got us all gripped on the edge of our seats. Votes continue to roll in across the country, as an increased mail-in ballot turnout ended-up extending the usual counting times. But what exactly are we waiting on?

US Election – latest news and results

In total, there are nine states left to declare. Some are favourable for Donald Trump, others are firmly in Joe Biden’s camp, and the rest could go either way. Trump seems to be in a more commanding position, but Joe Biden is likely to benefit from the late addition of mail-in ballots. However, getting a straight answer by the end of Wednesday could prove futile.

Some key states allow ballots to be sent in late, including Pennsylvania and North Carolina (6 November), and Nevada (10 November). In fact, election officials for the latter state are adamant that they won’t get finished at any point today:

Alaska

  • *Trump – 80 999 votes, 61.4% of the total share
  • Biden – 45,758 votes, 34.7% of the total share
  • Available Electoral Votes: Three
  • Percentage of votes counted so far: 36%

Arizona

  • Trump – 1,236,546 votes, 46.8% of the total share
  • *Biden – 1,367,211 votes, 51.8% of the total share*
  • Available Electoral Votes: 11
  • Percentage of votes counted so far: 82%

Georgia

  • *Trump – 2,381,870 votes, 50.5% of the total share
  • Biden – 2,279,736 votes, 48.3% of the total share
  • Available Electoral Votes: 16
  • Percentage of votes counted so far: 92

Nevada

  • Trump – 580,605 votes, 48.7% of the total share
  • *Biden – 588,252 votes, 49.3% of the total share
  • Available Electoral Votes: 6
  • Percentage of votes counted so far: 86%

Maine

  • Trump – 259,266 votes, 42.1% of the total share
  • *Biden – 337,365 votes, 54.8% of the total share
  • Available Electoral Votes: 4
  • Percentage of votes counted so far: 72%

Michigan

  • *Trump – 2,354,510 votes, 49.8% of the total share
  • Biden – 2,289,990 votes, 48.5% of the total share
  • Available Electoral Votes: 16
  • Percentage of votes counted so far: 83%

North Carolina
